Grace That Found Me

“‘Then I passed by you and saw you kicking about in your blood, and as you lay there in your blood I said to you, “Live!”’”  Ezekiel 16:6

Ezekiel 16 paints a vivid and heartbreaking picture of God’s love story with His people. It’s not the kind of love story we’d expect...it begins in abandonment, moves through rescue, and ends in betrayal. Yet even in betrayal, it reveals the shocking depth of God’s grace.

God describes Israel as a helpless baby, unwanted and left to die. No one cared. No one pitied. No one saw worth. But He did. He passed by, saw what others ignored, and said, “Live.” That single word changed everything. He washed her, clothed her, adorned her, and made her His own.

But as the story unfolds, the one who was rescued and loved forgets the One who loved her. She takes the very gifts He gave beauty, blessings, favor... and uses them to chase other loves. It’s a painful reflection of what our hearts can do too.

When I read Ezekiel 16, I see myself. I see the moments when God found me in my own “blood” broken, ashamed, and empty. I see His mercy reaching into the mess I couldn’t fix. I also see how easily I forget, how quickly I wander, and how often I trade His love for lesser things.

And yet… God’s story doesn’t end in rejection. His discipline is real, but so is His redemption. Later in the chapter, He says, “I will remember my covenant with you… and you will remember and be ashamed and never open your mouth anymore because of your shame when I atone for you.” (Ezekiel 16:60, 63)

He doesn’t just remember His covenant...He restores it.He doesn’t just call us out... He calls us back. The same God who said “Live” still speaks that word today.

If you’ve wandered, if you’ve wasted what He gave, if you’ve forgotten His grace... He hasn’t forgotten you. His mercy doesn’t wear out, it meets you right where you are.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for finding me when I was lost and for loving me when I was unlovable. Forgive me for the ways I’ve wandered and used Your blessings for my own glory. Help me remember the moment You said “Live.” Restore to me a heart that’s loyal, grateful, and in awe of Your mercy. Amen.
