When the Waves Keep Coming

Sometimes life feels like being in a wave pool. There are moments when one big wave hits, and you catch your breath, but other times... it feels like wave after wave, crashing one right after another. You try to stand, but the current pulls; you reach for air, but before you recover, another wave comes.

I’ve had those moments where life felt like too much. The bills, the waiting, the health scares, the losses... all piling up like waves that just won’t stop. But I’ve learned this: you don’t drown when your eyes stay fixed on God.

When Peter stepped out of the boat in Matthew 14, the waves didn’t stop, they were still crashing, still wild. But he walked on them as long as his eyes were on Jesus. The moment he looked at the wind and waves instead of the One who commanded them, he began to sink. It wasn’t the waves that drowned Peter; it was his focus.

In the same way, we often give in to fear, worry, or anxiety because we focus more on the storm than the Savior. Yet Jesus reminds us... the winds and the waves still obey Him. (Matthew 8:27) Even when life feels out of control, He is not shaken. He is still the same faithful God, standing above it all, reaching for us when we start to sink.

So if you’re in a season where the waves just keep coming, take heart... you’re not alone. Keep your eyes on the One who never leaves you in the storm. You may not be able to control the waves, but you can choose where to fix your gaze.

Prayer:

Lord, when the waves of life feel like too much, help me fix my eyes on You. Remind me that even when I feel surrounded, You are my anchor and peace. Teach me to trust the One whom the winds and waves obey. And when I start to sink, reach for me like You did Peter — lift me up and remind me I am never alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
